Trust me, once you take that first bite, you’ll be hooked!
When we visit my mom in New York, my kids venture out on food adventures. They told me how delicious the infamous chopped cheese sandwich is, so I had to recreate it at home. It holds a special place in the hearts of New Yorkers, and I guarantee it’ll become your new obsession in no time.
Why will we obsess over this sandwich?
Tender, juicy,
Seasoned beef,
Gooey, melty cheese
Buttery peppers and onions
Leafy lettuce
Briny jalapenos,
Tangy, spicy sriracha sauce
All on a soft hoagie roll!
What do I need to make chopped cheese?
Hoagie rolls – Feel free to use hamburger or hot dog buns instead of the hoagie rolls.
Onion –cut in half and not too thinly sliced so they hold up when cooking.
Bell pepper -choose your favorite color or mix them together and slice them the same size as the onion.
Olive oil -you can use your favorite cooking oil, but I love the flavor my extra virgin olive oil adds to the veggies.
Ground beef -I like to use beef that has some fat in it, so the sandwich is nice and juicy; at least 15% is good.
Salt & freshly cracked black pepper -this helps bring everything to life.
Garlic powder -the perfect addition to salt and pepper for beef.
Ground coriander -adds a little bit of sweetness with a hint of citrus to the beef.
Cheese -American, cheddar, muenster, mozzarella, or your favorite melty cheeses.
What’s in the sauce?
Mayonnaise -use your favorite mayo to create this simple sauce.
Sriracha sauce -adds a tangy, sweet, and spicy kick to the mayo.
What can I put out for toppings?
Everyone may like it a little differently, but some great options would be ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, fresh onions, pickled jalapeños, pickles, and sliced avocado.
How do I make the sauce?
Whisk together some mayo with sriracha to taste in a bowl.
How do I cook the veggies?
Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium heat and add the onion and pepper slices, two tablespoons of olive oil, and a pinch of salt. Cook until softened, then transfer to a plate or bowl.
How do I melt the cheese into the beef?
Add the ground beef to the skillet and flatten it out. Then, season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and coriander. Cook over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes. Flip it over and season with salt. Break the beef up and cook for 2 minutes. Top with lots of cheese and cook until it melts.
How do I put the sandwiches together?
Toast the buns and slice them in half, lengthwise. Add sauce and some ketchup. Top with lettuce, the onion and bell pepper mixture, and some jalapenos. Top with the chopped cheese meat and any additional toppings your family loves, and serve. Kali Orexi!
Do you have more delicious sandwiches?
Yes! I make a lot of Spanakopita Grilled Cheese and Open-Faced Pita Sandwiches at my house. However, our new favorite is the Chicken Salad Melt. My family asks for Smoked Salmon Tea Sandwiches when we have brunch gatherings, but Freezer-Friendly Egg Sandwiches save us on busy mornings. And every time I want to go big with sandwich flavors, I make my Ultimate Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwiches. You’re going to love all of these.
