Summer is here, and that means it’s watermelon season! There’s nothing quite like biting into a juicy, sweet watermelon on a hot day. But how do you make sure you pick the sweetest one? Today, I’m sharing my go-to tips for selecting the perfect watermelon.

There’s nothing more refreshing and delicious to me on a hot summer day than a juicy, extra sweet watermelon. Whether you’re enjoying it as a snack, adding it to a salad, or blending it into a smoothie, a perfectly ripe watermelon can make all the difference. So, what should you look for when buying watermelons? Here are some essential tips to help you choose the best one:

Sweet watermelons with field spots

1. Look for a Uniform Shape

Whether it’s round or oval, the watermelon should have a consistent shape. Irregularities can indicate fluctuations in water or sunlight during growth, which might affect the flavor and texture.

2. Check the Field Spot

The field spot is the area where the watermelon rested on the ground. Look for a creamy yellow spot; the darker and more pronounced it is, the longer the melon ripened on the vine, which usually means it’s sweeter. Avoid melons with a white or greenish field spot as they were likely picked too soon.

3. Tap for a Hollow Sound

Give the watermelon a good tap; a ripe one will produce a deep, hollow sound. If it sounds dull or flat, it might not be fully ripe yet.

4. Look for Webbing

Those brown, web-like streaks on the surface are actually a good sign! They indicate that bees touched the pollinating parts of the flower many times. The more pollination, the sweeter the fruit.

5. Heaviness is Key

A sweet watermelon is a juicy watermelon. Compare a few of similar size and choose the heaviest one. This means it’s full of water and sweetness.

6. Inspect the Skin

The skin of a ripe watermelon should be dull, not shiny. A shiny melon might not be ripe yet. Also, avoid ones with cuts, dents, or soft spots.

7. Consider the Sugar Spots

Look for dark, rough patches or sugar spots where sugar has leaked out. These are signs of a sweet melon!

8. Size Doesn’t Always Matter

While you might be tempted to go for the biggest watermelon, remember that size doesn’t always determine sweetness. Focus on the other tips above for the best results.

9. Look for the Tail

The tail, or the stem, should be dry. If it’s green, the watermelon might have been picked too early.

10. Trust Your Instincts

Finally, don’t forget to trust your instincts! Sometimes, you just get a good feeling about a particular watermelon, and often, you’ll be right.

Growing up, I enjoyed the best watermelons during our summer vacations in Crete. The hot, sunny days were perfect for indulging in these sweet, juicy fruits. We would pick them fresh from the local markets, following many of the same tips I’m sharing with you today. Those childhood memories of sitting under the shade, biting into a slice of watermelon, and feeling the juice trickle down my chin are some of my favorites. The watermelons in Crete were always incredibly sweet, and they set the bar high for what a perfect watermelon should taste like.

I hope these tips help you pick the sweetest watermelon for your summer picnics, BBQs, and family gatherings. There’s nothing better than enjoying a perfect slice of watermelon under the sun. Happy summer and happy watermelon picking!
