What are the ingredients for Nutella phyllo twists?
Phyllo pastry sheets – Paper-thin pastry that becomes light, crisp, and beautifully flaky when baked with butter. Be sure to thaw it in the refrigerator overnight, then place it on the counter at room temperature about an hour before using it.
Nutella – A creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread that melts into a rich, smooth filling. Any chocolate hazelnut spread you love will do. If you want to switch it up, try a vanilla hazelnut spread, chocolate sauce, or a pistachio cream.
Butter – Brushed between the phyllo layers to create crisp, golden pastry and that irresistible buttery flavor.
What’s in the syrup?
Granulated sugar – Sweetens the syrup and gives the pastries a glossy finish if drizzled on top.
Water – Dissolves the sugar to create a light syrup with a great consistency.
Vanilla extract – Adds warmth and fragrance, and flavors the syrup perfectly.
Can I finish these with something other than syrup?
Powdered sugar – A light dusting adds sweetness and a beautiful finish.
Vanilla syrup – A delicate drizzle adds extra moisture and flavor.
Make-Ahead Hosting Tip: For gatherings, bake these just before guests arrive. The aroma of buttery phyllo and warm chocolate instantly creates that cozy, welcoming feeling that makes everyone feel at home. Arrange them on a platter with coffee or tea, and you have an effortless yet impressive sweet offering.

How to Make Nutella Phyllo Twists
How do I make the vanilla syrup?
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then simmer for 3–4 minutes, until slightly thickened. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
What’s the best way to prepare the Nutella for spreading?
Warm the Nutella slightly either in the microwave or by placing the jar in warm water. This loosens the texture and makes it easier to spread.
How do I layer the phyllo pastry?
Lay one sheet of phyllo pastry on your work surface and lightly brush it with melted butter. Place another sheet of phyllo on top and brush it with butter as well.

Is there an easy way to create the signature scrunched phyllo texture?
Gently scrunch the layered phyllo from both sides toward the center, keeping the middle slightly loose. This creates natural folds that bake into crispy, flaky layers.
Do I stuff or spread the Nutella filling?
Spread a line of Nutella along the length of the pastry. Fold gently and twist loosely into a rope or spiral shape.
How long do I bake the phyllo twists?
Place the twists on a parchment-lined baking tray and brush the tops with the remaining melted butter. Bake in a 350°F (180°C) oven for 25–30 minutes, until deeply golden and crisp.
When do I add the syrup?
As soon as the twists come out of the oven, pour the cooled syrup all over the top of the twists. Let cool so the phyllo can absorb the flavorful syrup.

Can I finish these with something other than the syrup?
Yes! Allow the pastries to cool slightly. Dust lightly with powdered sugar or drizzle with a small amount of vanilla syrup before serving.
What’s the best way to serve them?
Warm, with coffee or espresso, while the chocolate filling is still soft and melty.
Can I make these ahead of time?
You can assemble the phyllo twists a few hours in advance and keep them covered in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, bake them fresh. This makes them perfect for entertaining or serving warm pastries without last-minute prep.
