A fusion of rich Greek coffee and velvety hot chocolate creates a beverage that’s as indulgent as it is unique.
Greek coffee hot chocolate combines the robust notes of a perfect cup of Greek coffee with the comforting, familiar taste of hot chocolate for a delightful drink perfect for cozy evenings or special gatherings.
I came up with this idea one day when it was getting cooler and guests started coming over for gatherings. I thought, “What a great idea it would be to have hot chocolate with Greek coffee,” and this is the delicious result. It’s so easy to make, and you can make single servings or multiply the recipe to make as many cups as you need.
Why is this the best hot chocolate?
Rich, thick
Creamy, velvety
Sweet, roasted
Chocolatey coffee with
Fluffy, creamy
Sweet whipped cream and
Warm, sweet and
Spicy, minty cardamom!
What ingredients do I need for coffee hot chocolate?
Greek coffee -if you’ve never had it, it’s powdered. So you don’t have to strain it. The grinds stay in the cup. If you don’t already drink Greek coffee, you can use your favorite coffee. However, if you don’t drink Greek coffee, try it because it’s the best!
Semi-sweet chocolate chips -this makes the hot chocolate sweet and rich, but if you like yours a little less sweet, try bittersweet chocolate or a combination of the two. It’s okay if you have to drink a couple of cups to get it just right. Ha!
Ground cardamom seeds -ground cardamom in grocery stores isn’t as potent as the cardamom seed pods. So, if you grind yours fresh, you might need a little less.
Water -always start with cold filtered water for the best tasting coffee.
Sugar -I typically add about a teaspoon to the water with my coffee to balance out the bitterness of the coffee, but you can add more if you prefer.
What’s in whipped cream?
Heavy whipping cream -There are only two ingredients for homemade whipped cream, so be sure to get a good quality cream with great flavor.
Confectioner’s sugar -I use about a tablespoon, but you can add more or less to sweeten your whipped cream the way you like it.
What type of garnishes can you use?
I love to use cocoa powder and ground cardamom, but you can use your imagination here. What variations of hot chocolate and coffee do you like? Try cinnamon, pumpkin spice, or a caramel drizzle!
How to make Greek Coffee Hot Chocolate?
Place the water (enough to fill the serving cup), sugar, and Greek coffee in a briki pot. Stir together and cook over medium heat until it comes to a boil. Add the chocolate chips and the cardamom to your cup and pour enough coffee over the top to cover the chocolate chips. Whisk together until the chocolate melts.
Place the briki with the remaining coffee back on the heat until it foams again. Then, finish filling your cup with coffee.
How to make homemade whipped cream?
I always make homemade whipped cream because it’s only two ingredients and super easy to make. I just whisk the cream and powdered sugar together until thick and fluffy. Remember, add more or less sugar to achieve the sweetness you like. Plus, you can add a little vanilla to flavor it if you’d like.
What’s the best way to serve Greek coffee hot chocolate?
I dollop one… or two… spoonfuls of whipped cream over the hot cocoa and dust with cocoa powder and cardamom. It smells so good and looks so yummy that everyone else will want one, too. So, have plenty of fluffy blankets ready for everyone to cozy up or gather around the fire pit with their decadent hot chocolate.
Is there a Christmas version?
Of course! Crumble some peppermint candy and add it to your cup with the chocolate chips. It will melt into the hot chocolate with the chocolate chips. Then, sprinkle some peppermint crumbles on top of the whipped cream to add even more flavor and beauty for your guests.
If you love mixing up hot chocolate and coffee, try my hazelnut hot chocolate, Dalgona whipped coffee, or the Greek frappe. I even have a chai latte on the blog and teach you how to froth milk!
